Todos los esfuerzos, todas las conversaciones y todos los placeres finalizan con el cementerio. Cada paso lleva al hombre más cerca de eso, no más lejos. Entonces, ¿por qué deleitarse mientras viven creyendo que esto es real y duradero? Deben haber escuchado lo siguiente: “¡Practiquen dos, renuncien a dos!” ¿A qué se refiere? Las dos cosas a las que hay que renunciar son: a todo recuerdo de (1) el mal que otros les hacen a ustedes, y (2) del bien que ustedes hacen a los demás. Las dos cosas que deben practicarse incesantemente son: (1) la creencia de que la muerte es segura e inevitable, y (2) que Dios existe y cede a la oración y a la pureza. Por lo general, las personas hacen lo contrario: no olvidan el mal que otros hacen ni el bien que ellos mismos hacen; olvidan el hecho de la muerte y el hecho de la existencia de Dios. Si buscan beneficios en cada acto, ¿de
qué sirve? Los depósitos bancarios, los inmuebles, los títulos y las riquezas deben ser dejados atrás. Tan pronto como se respira el último aliento, nuestro cuerpo se convierte en una cosa maloliente y de mal augurio, y ¡es removido de la mismísima casa que construyeron y amaron! All efforts, all talk, and all pleasures end with the graveyard. Every step takes man nearer to that, not farther. Then, why revel while living, believing this to be real and lasting? You must have heard this: Practice two, give up two! What are they? The two things to be given up are: all remembrance of (1) the evil that others do to you, and (2) the good that you do to others. The two things to be practiced incessantly are: (1) belief that death is certain and inevitable and (2) that God exists and yields to prayer and purity. Usually people do the opposite. They do not forget the evil that others do or the good that is done by them; they forget the fact of death and the fact of God’s existence. If you seek for profit in every act, of what use is it? Bank deposits, buildings, degrees, titles and riches must all be left behind. As soon as the last breath is drawn, our body becomes a thing of foul smell and bad omen; it is removed from the very
