Hace muchos años un sabio tenía un gato en su ermita. Cada vez que realizaba una ofrenda de oblaciones a los dioses en el fuego consagrado (“homa”), el gato cacheaba el fuego y le ocasionaba muchos problemas. Para evitar esto, lo atrapaba antes de empezar y lo mantenía debajo de una cesta invertida por el tiempo que duraba el ritual. Su hijo, que observó esta operación durante años, pensó que el atrapar y encerrar al gato era una parte vital del ritual en sí. Por este motivo, se dedicaba con mucho afán a buscar un gato antes de cada “homa” y se sentía muy feliz cuando encontraba uno que podía mantener debajo de una cesta invertida en la misma habitación. Ese es un ejemplo de repetición mecánica sin sentido. ¡El esfuerzo espiritual no debe convertirse en la repetición mecánica de fórmulas establecidas o en
la práctica de formalidades vacías! Recuerden, sus esfuerzos espirituales deben ser para atraer la gracia de Dios sobre ustedes. ¡Sus prácticas espirituales deben estar acompañadas de una oración sincera desde el corazón! Discurso Divino del 14 de Enero de 1967.

 

Once a sage had a cat in his hermitage. Whenever he performed a homa (offering oblations to gods into the consecrated fire), the cat frisked about the fire and gave a lot of trouble to him. So he caught it in advance and kept it under an inverted basket for the duration of the homa. His son who watched this operation for years thought that this cat-catching and cat-imprisonment were vital parts of the ritual itself. So he took great trouble to seek out a cat before every homa and felt happy when he got one which he could keep under an inverted basket in the same room. That is an example of meaningless mechanical repetition. Spiritual effort should not become mechanical repetition of set formulae or execution of dry formalities! Remember, your spiritual endeavours must be to attract the grace of God on yourselves. Your spiritual practices must be accompanied by a sincere prayer from the heart!
