«Ratri» o Noche significa oscuridad. «Shiva» significa auspiciosidad. De manera que Shivaratri alude a una auspiciosidad que es inherente a la oscuridad, y hace referencia a la sabiduría que existe en medio de la ignorancia. La ignorancia y la sabiduría no son distintas; básicamente son la misma cosa.
Ambas son las polaridades opuestas del mismo principio subyacente. La Divinidad (Paratatva) es el estado que trasciende a las dos, sabiduría e ignorancia. Es una etapa que no está asociada con idas y vueltas, donde no ocurren nacimiento ni muerte. En tanto haya nacimiento para el cuerpo, la muerte habrá de sobrevenir. ¿Qué es lo que nace ? ¿Es el Atma ? No, es sólo el cuerpo el que ha nacido. Recuerda, tú eres la eterna e inmutable Atma. La luz es valiosa sólo cuando existe oscuridad. Por esa razón, en tiempos de problemas y pesares, cuando surjan
dificultades, ¡ recuerda evocar el fundamento de la Divinidad, que derramará claridad y luz ! (Divino Discurso, 17 Feb. 1985)

 

‘Ratri’ or Night signifies darkness. ‘Shiva’ means auspiciousness. So, ‘Shivarathri’ speaks of an auspiciousness which is inherent in darkness. It refers to the wisdom which exists in the midst of ignorance. Ignorance and wisdom are not distinct; they are basically the same. They are the opposite polarities of the same underlying principle. The state that transcends both wisdom and ignorance is Divinity (Paratatva). It is a stage which is not associated with any coming or going, where birth and death do not occur. So long as there is birth for the body, death has to follow. What is it that has taken birth? Is it the Atma? No. It is only the body which has taken birth. Remember, you are the eternal, never changing Atma. Light has value only when there is darkness. Therefore in times of trouble and sorrow, whenever problems arise, remember to evoke the principle of Divinity, which will shed illumination and light!
