Había un emperador que siempre preguntaba a los sabios que lo visitaban en su palacio : «¿Quién es el mejor entre los hombres ? ¿Qué momento en el tiempo es el más bendecido ? ¿Qué acto es el más beneficioso ?». Durante un largo tiempo no logró obtener respuestas satisfactorias. Eventualmente sus dominios fueron invadidos y debió huír a la jungla. Allí fué capturado por una tribu que lo seleccionó como ofrenda a su diosa. En esta precaria situación, un asceta lo rescató y lo condujo a su ermita, donde fué atendido amorosamente por el asceta y sus estudiantes hasta que recuperó su salud y felicidad. En medio de ese ambiente amoroso y sereno, el monarca descubrió las respuestas a sus preguntas. El mejor entre todos es el que tiene compasión. El tiempo más bendecido es el presente, y la mejor
acción es aliviar el dolor y sufrimiento de otro. ¡ No pospongas lo que puedes hacer hoy, ahora, en este mismo momento, para una fecha futura ! (Divino Discurso, Septiembre 7, 1966).
There was an emperor who always asked the sages who visited his palace, “Who is the best among men? Which moment of time is most blessed? Which act is most beneficial?” He could not get satisfactory answers for a long time. Eventually his realm was invaded and he had to flee into the jungle. There he was captured by a tribe who selected him as an offering to their goddess. In this precarious condition, he was rescued by an ascetic who took him to his hermitage, where he and his students lovingly tended him back to health and happiness. Amidst that loving and serene environment, the king discovered the answers to his questions. The best amongst all is the one who has compassion. The most blessed time is the ‘present’ and the best act is to relieve another’s pain and grief. Do not postpone what you can do today, now, this very moment, to a future date!
